This idea is central to more advanced probability reasoning and provides the foundation for understanding relationships between events.
Probability assignments can also require students to translate a real situation into a mathematical model. A problem involving cards, surveys, medical testing, manufacturing defects, or financial risk may require the same underlying process: define the outcomes, identify the relevant events, establish their relationships, calculate the probability, and interpret what the result means.
Students should also distinguish between mathematical probability and the context in which it is being applied. A correctly calculated value is not enough if the assumptions behind the calculation have been misunderstood.
